Sometimes it helps to talk to someone who has been there

“I was able to talk to someone who had been in the same boat – that understood my worries and anxieties, someone outside my family. The service provided me with much needed encouragement and support”

How support helped one caller

'I found the Asian Cancer Support Group number in the back of one of the books I got from Cancer Information Centre of my Hospital and feeling desperate one day I rang the number...

The lady on the other end said she would see what she could do to find someone to help me and that afternoon the volunteer rang.

It was such a relief to speak to her as she had such a similar situation to me.

I could speak to her about what I was feeling and she would say that she had felt that too and not to worry, because it was part of the chemotherapy, or whatever. She was so calm and reasoning and would talk me through things.

The one to one support service is worth its weight – I really can’t praise it enough. It is just so comforting to come off the phone and know that you’re not the only one and that it is not always as bad as you assume it will be.

Having someone there to support me, well it just got me through that summer really and makes me feel so grateful.'

“I never felt lonely since joining the Asian Cancer Support Group, where warmth and support I received from the group, knowing that the support team is always there if I need them.”

You know that receiving care and support can make all the difference
