This group was launched in January 2005 in South London following the success of the North London Support Group, which started a year earlier. The group works under the umbrella body, Oshwal Elderly Welfare Association (OEWA). Macmillan Cancer Relief, the biggest charity in welfare of cancer patients has supported us. The foremost purpose of the group is to reach out to the Asian communities and make them more aware of the services and information that can be achieved through the various sources in case of needs.
Satish Shah, an extremely dynamic co-ordinator of OEWA is the brains and inspiration for this project, mainly because he is a carer for his wife who is a cancer patient and he personally encountered major hurdles when he needed to know about the condition and the services.
At the Launch there was an attendance of about 180 people, and also had very good representation from other Cancer Organisations, namely Cancer Bacup, Cancer Research, NHS Cancer Services and other key workers.
